Thinking about working from a coffee shop to get out of the house? Make sure you have these 10 essential accessories with you before heading out.
1. A Really Good Planner
I use my planner to stay organized.
I am a proponent of setting 12 week goals at time (based on this book) and I started with the Best Self Planner, which is a 12 week tracker.
But with a 3 monthly calendar pages it’s hard to remember long range appointments and commitments. So I had to maintain a separate yearly calendar.
Then I learned about this awesome planner.
I like it because the year’s worth of monthly pages allows me to keep track of things like doctor’s appointments that may be scheduled months out, yet still has an area to plan each day.
And it’s undated – so you can start in the middle of August if that’s what works for you.
2. A good water bottle
Don’t be that person who works from coffee shop but doesn’t buy anything. That’s not cool.
But don’t hesitate to bring in your own water in a good bottle. No need to ask for a plastic non-Earth-friendly cup from the barista. Plus you’ll want something to balance out that rich syrupy drink you ordered, anyway.
3. Headphones or Earbuds
Headphones or earbuds can drown out the crappy music over the speakers or the chatty table next to you. Plus, wearing headphones is also the universal symbol for “leave me alone.”
Whether you use them to play your favorite jams, a concentration app or just for noise cancelling, you’ll be glad you have them.
If you’re not a fan of the standard headphones that come with your phone, here’s a great upgrade option.
4. Sweater (or hoodie)
Temperatures can be unpredictable. Sometimes it seems like the hotter it is outside, the more the air conditioning is cranked. Or maybe the only seat near an outlet left is the one by the door. You’re going to want another layer.
At the risk of sounding like your mom – be sure to take a sweater.
5. A wireless mouse
Are you a savvy laptop touch pad user? I’m not.
Maybe it’s my age (I didn’t grow up using one) or my laptop’s age (sometimes the touch pad decides not to work), but I struggle to work efficiently without my mouse.
Having a wireless mouse helps keeps the work going.
6. Hand sanitizer
Here’s the biggest dilemna when working from a coffee shop.
At some point, it’s inevitable. You’re going to have to go the restroom. You can’t wait until its time to leave, but you don’t want to lug all your stuff to the bathroom with you.
Instead of impatiently waiting for your hands to dry under the air dryer (which seems to take forever when you’re wondering if your laptop is still at your table), get back to your spot and sanitize your hands there.
Of course, this doesn’t guarantee your stuff won’t wander away if you leave it unattended, so use your own good sense.
7. A good laptop bag
If you bring all the things listed above, you’re going to need something to carry it all in. A good laptop bag does the trick. I prefer a laptop bag to a backpack, because backpacks can be a bottomless pit and often have so many pockets I forget where I put something.
Here’s a cute bag that gets lots of great reviews.
Working from a coffee shop or casual restaurant can be a great way to get out of the house. Taking these essentials along with you with help you buckle down and get stuff knocked off your to do list.
Bonus Tip: Your Rewards Card
If you frequent a particular coffee shop (Starbucks) or restaurant (Panera), then by all means sign up for their reward programs. Sure, it may take time to tally up enough “point” or whatever they track, but you might as well get something for your loyalty, right?
What do you take with you when working from a coffee shop? Did I forget anything on the list of essentials?
